This year in my patchwork group we have a new "leader-teacher" . In fact, as J. moved to
Djibouti ( how are you doing over there ?! hot, hot I imagine ...) her place was taken by a new arrived expat, who became our teacher. She is french and she wants us to learn how to
applique. Applique comes from the french word - appliquer which means to "put on" - sewing smaller pieces of fabric into a larger background. I'm giving it a try. Using african fabrics, as I
usually do here ...

Now that this gift belongs to my dear friend C., I don't need to make it a secret anymore and I can show it here !
She told me which colours she would prefer and I just searched for it in my growing stash of african fabrics ( I keep collecting since I'm living here ....).

... for a new quilt. Each day a new star is born !
I'm really enjoying making these and there are others like it on the way ...
As I live in Africa, I have househelpers, and that allows me to be a very fast quilter ! :-)
Mi rendo conto che la vita da "expat" è fantastica per sviluppare un "hobby" o tutte altre cose che prendono troppo
tempo da fare nel "mondo reale" ... Questo non vuol dire che questa vita non è reale ... ma qui il tempo conta diversamente, e c'è molto più tempo libero, forse come nel
passato, quando non c'erano centri commerciali e televisione ...
Così, cari lettori, mi potete immaginare, tranquillamente in giardino nel tardo pommeriggio, leggendo, cucendo, bevendo un sorso di succo di mango ...

In questa t-shirt ho cucito un'applicazione in patchwork (stoffe africane) e ho ricamato il disegno ... Come vi pare ? L'ho regalata a J.,
uno dei bambini dell'orfanotrofio di cui vi ho parlato.
L'altro giorno prendevo un caffè con degli amici in un'albergo in città, e ho incrociato tre coppie italiane che sono venute a prendere i suoi bambini adottati. Facevano i suoi
primi passi come famiglia in questo albergo tranquillo prima di prendere l'aereo che li portava via definitivamente. Emozionante osservarli. Fragili e trepidanti entrambi.
Anna ha reunito nel suo blog alcuni indirizzi dove le "crafters" possono spedire dei regali per bambini
orfani e malati,
Laura prende una iniziativa simile per i bimbi in Italia, il blog
Regaliamo un sorriso, anche.
Crafting e solidarietà verso chi ha bisogno : penso che sia un'ottima accoppiata !
Ma attenzione alla posta,
Heidi ha preparato un regalo per l'orfanotrofio che purtroppo non è arrivato, quanto mi dispiace ! ...

Ho finito il mio 1° sampler quilt ! Tutto fatto con stoffe di cotone africano.
È stato un ottimo esercizio di pazienza : cucire
questi blocchi insieme e sopratutto, fare il "quilting" alla mano (cioè, il
trapuntare dei tre strati di stoffa) !
Ho ascoltato tanta musica mentre che ci lavoravo: la vecchia Suzanne Vega, il sognatore Debussy, la brillante Marisa Monte e anche qualcuno che a casa comincia a suonare benino il pianoforte
... ;-)

This mini version of wall quilt is just perfect when you're willing
to do a small patchwork with quick finishing results.
This time I decided to choose fabrics with the warm savannah colours : chocolate, coffee
and acacia green .

Do you notice all these hearts ? This pattern was supposed to be the the common project for Saint Valentine's for my patchwork group ...
you can guess that we have some american among us for the theme's choice ! ...
Everyone used different fabrics which pulled shapes together into very different looks. It's always nice to see someone else's take on the same project. My teacher (she comes from India)
used some indian cotton fabrics that gave it a special Bollywood look , with some gold touches on it (unfortunately the photo is not so good ...).
And can you spot mine ?
We used this book for diagrams."Hearts - Pattern design" by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes
Our next project ? A quilted blanket for picnics in the park ... or under an acacia shade out there in the savanna ...

My table is a big rectangle. The ends of the runner barely reach the edge of the table. I think it looks okay to add a splash of colour over my linen tablecloth. Well, I can use it as a wall
hanging too.
